Hearing the phrase “root canal” often makes people tense up. However, understanding the root canal step by step process can ease your anxiety. For years it has had a reputation for being painful, but modern dentistry has changed treatment into a predictable, comfortable procedure designed to remove pain rather than cause it.
Understanding what a root canal involves removes much of the fear. When you know the steps, the purpose, and the aftercare, it becomes far less intimidating and far more logical. In most cases, the goal is simple, save your natural tooth and stop infection before it spreads.
Inside every tooth is a soft tissue called pulp. Specifically, this tissue contains nerves and blood vessels that help the tooth grow during your youth. However, once a tooth is fully developed, it no longer needs this tissue to survive. Unfortunately, if bacteria reach the pulp through decay or trauma, a serious infection can occur.
A root canal removes the infected pulp, disinfects the inside of the tooth and seals it to prevent further problems. Without treatment, infection can spread to surrounding bone and gums, sometimes leading to tooth loss or more complex surgery.
According to the NHS, root canal treatment is a common and highly successful way to treat this infection and save a tooth that might otherwise need extraction.

Some infections develop quietly with minimal pain, which is why regular dental check-ups are so important. X-rays often reveal issues before symptoms appear.
Your dentist checks the tooth and takes an X-ray to understand the shape of the canals and extent of infection. This ensures accurate treatment planning.
The area is completely numbed. Most patients feel nothing more than mild pressure. Modern anaesthesia is extremely effective and designed for comfort.
A small opening is made in the tooth so the infected tissue can be removed. Tiny instruments clean the canals thoroughly and remove bacteria.
The canals are shaped so they can be properly filled. Antibacterial solutions reduce the risk of reinfection.
A rubber-like material is placed inside to seal the space. This prevents bacteria from returning.
Most root-treated teeth receive a crown or strong filling. This step protects the tooth and restores full chewing ability.
Mild soreness for a few days is normal, similar to having a deep filling. Standard pain relief is usually enough. Severe pain is uncommon and should be reviewed quickly.
