There’s an old assumption that dentures mean bulky, uncomfortable false teeth that click when you talk and need to come out at night in a glass by the bed. That image is well out of date. Modern dentures in Telford are lighter, better fitted, and far more natural-looking than most people expect, and at Shawbirch Dental we see patients of all ages benefiting from them.
If you’ve lost teeth through decay, injury, or gum disease, dentures remain one of the most practical ways to restore your smile and get back to eating and speaking comfortably.
A denture is a removable appliance that replaces missing teeth, custom made to fit the shape of your mouth. They’re built from a combination of a gum-coloured base and replacement teeth designed to blend in with any natural teeth you still have.
There isn’t just one type. Which option suits you depends on how many teeth you’re missing, where they are, and what you want from the result.
A full denture replaces an entire arch of teeth – either the top, the bottom, or both. This is the right option once all of the natural teeth in an arch are gone. A well-made full denture restores your ability to chew properly, supports your lips and cheeks, and can make a real difference to how your face looks, particularly if teeth have been missing for a while and the jaw has started to lose shape.
If you still have some healthy natural teeth, a partial denture fills the gaps left by missing ones. It clips onto your remaining teeth using small metal or discreet tooth-coloured clasps, and it’s usually the more conservative option when full tooth loss isn’t the picture.
For patients who find loose or slipping dentures frustrating, attaching a denture to dental implants can make a substantial difference. A small number of implants are placed in the jaw, and the denture clips securely onto them. The result is far more stable – no slipping while eating, no worrying about it moving when you laugh or speak.
For many patients the improvement in day-to-day confidence makes it worthwhile. We’re always happy to talk through whether this is a sensible option for you during a consultation.
The process is more involved than people often expect, and rushing it tends to produce a worse fit. At Shawbirch Dental, it typically takes around four visits, roughly two weeks apart.
We start by discussing what you want from your new teeth and taking measurements, scans, or impressions of your mouth. Digital photographs help us match the shade and shape of any remaining natural teeth. From there, your denture is built up in stages, with fittings along the way to check comfort and appearance before the final version is made.
At your last appointment, we check the bite feels right, the fit is comfortable, and – just as importantly – that you’re happy with how they look.
Almost certainly, for the first couple of weeks. It’s completely normal to notice extra saliva, a slight lisp, or some odd sensations as your mouth adjusts to something new sitting against your gums and palate. This settles down quickly for most people. Eating tends to feel unfamiliar to begin with too – we usually suggest starting with softer foods and building back up to a normal diet gradually.
If a denture feels sore or rubs anywhere, don’t just put up with it. Come back and see us. A quick adjustment usually sorts it out.
Good denture care makes a genuine difference to how long they last and how your mouth feels day to day:
The NHS has some useful general guidance on denture care if you want a second source alongside our advice.
That really depends on your situation. Dentures work well for many patients, but they’re not the only route to replacing missing teeth – implants and bridges are worth considering too, particularly if only one or two teeth are affected. The honest answer is that there’s no single best option for everyone. What matters is finding the right fit for your mouth, your budget, and what you want day to day.
If you’re missing teeth and want to talk through what would work best for you, we’re happy to help. Get in touch with Shawbirch Dental and we’ll arrange a consultation to talk you through your options properly.
